Frequently Asked Questions

Below, we've answered some of the most common questions about our PAT testing services, what’s involved, how often it’s needed, and why it matters.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

While PAT testing itself is not legally mandated, businesses are legally required under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 to ensure all electrical equipment is safe to use. PAT testing is the most effective way to demonstrate compliance.

What appliances need to be PAT tested?

Any appliance with a plug that connects to a wall socket or generator should be tested. This includes: Computers and monitors, Kettles and microwaves, Extension leads, Power tools, Chargers and more.

What does the PAT test involve?

A trained technician will:
Visually inspect the appliance and cable
Check the plug and fuse
Perform electronic tests for insulation, earth continuity, and polarity
Label the appliance with a pass or fail sticker
Provide a detailed test report and certificate

How long does PAT testing take?

The duration depends on the number of appliances. On average, our technicians can test 15–25 appliances per hour, depending on accessibility and condition.

What happens if an appliance fails?

If an appliance fails, it will be clearly marked, and the issue will be recorded in your report. We can advise whether it should be repaired or replaced.
